Indian Wedding Guide

What should I wear?

1. Dress up! Accessories and glam are encouraged!

2. Although not required, feel free to explore traditional Indian attire such as lehengas, anarkali suits, salwar kameez, and sarees (feminine) or kurtas and nehru jackets (masculine).

Vivah Sanskar

This is the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony that formally unites the couple through symbolic rituals, prayers, and blessings.

What should I expect?

1. The ceremony begins with the baraat which is the formal entrance of the groom and his family. This is lively and involves dancing and live music.

2. After the baraat and welcoming rituals, the bride enters and joins the groom at the mandap (altar).

3. The agni (sacred fire) is lit, and the priest chants mantras to guide the couple through ceremonial rituals.

4. The couple commences the 'pheras'- seven symbolic revolutions around the fire, representing their promises for married life.

5. The ceremony takes about 1 hour.

What should I do?

1. If you are from the groom's side, please accompany the ‘baraat’ and expect to be warmly welcomed by the bride’s family. This is a lively procession that involves dancing and live music.

2. If you are from the bride’s side, please proceed directly to the venue and stand with her family to welcome the baraat.

3. Kindly listen for cues to stand or be seated during the ceremony.

Sangeet

The Sangeet is the celebration following the ceremony that includes food, drinks, and lots of dancing.

What should I expect?

1. Lots of dancing! Some family and friends will perform lively, choreographed dances.

2. There are not many, if any, scheduled formalities. The event is all about fun and celebration!
